A Joyful Existence

Last night, at approximately half past midnight, I laid awake, eyes wide open, smiling. Knowing full well that I would have to leave the warmth of my bedsheets in only five hours, I begged my mind to let me go to sleep. No matter how hard I tried to stop thinking, however, my thoughts would not stop racing around, chasing one another like dogs nipping at tails. I was too excited for life.

My insomnia was the product of realizing how inconsolably joyful I am to do that which I have decided to devote my life to. It is the kind of happiness that is only visible to the individual who experiences it, who is not even aware that he or she is happy until they lie awake one night, unable to rest for thinking of all the wonderful things that are going to happen in their life.

For me, filmmaking is the most inconceivably rewarding life endeavor that I can imagine. I can think of nothing more exciting than waking up in the morning to go out and discover new lighting techniques, or search the corners of my mind for new characters, or bring to life stories previously unseen. I get tingles and butterflies where my heart should be when I think about living that reality every day of my life, rather than just when I have the time.

This is not to say that filmmaking is the only fulfilling career out there. In fact, quite the opposite. Each person has to find what they want to spend their life loving. I could no sooner imagine myself working with children every day than I could picture myself rocketing into space; yet, for some, impacting little lives is the only thing that gets them up in the morning. Our passions are as distinct as our fingerprints.

Thus, I encourage everyone reading this to discover his or her passion in life and never let go of it. If you haven’t yet found that thing that gives you joyous flutters of the stomach, go out and experiment! And do not be discouraged if you feel like there is nothing that gives you that fulfillment; the ones like myself who find their passion early in life are the luckiest people in the world. We’re abnormal. Passion doesn’t hit overnight.

And if you have an unrealized dream for life, go and capture it! Put some faith into life and be uncomfortable. Follow your dreams, because they are what never leave us.

And if you are one of the lucky ones who are living their dream, don’t forget those butterflies and the excitement of living a life of passion and drive. Be thrilled for every new day! Life is a celebration of what we love, and it should be treated as such. See life’s beauty in everything you do, and it will be reflected in your face.
